Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s going on around the area:
It’s almost that time for Kylan Boswell and the Illini men’s basketball team to interact with the Orange Krush after home games at State Farm Center.
Three reasons we love sports today
➜ 1. Football season is in full swing, obviously, but it won’t be long until basketball season arrives. Case in point: Illinois men’s basketball is holding its on-campus media day on Thursday afternoon.
➜ 2. That’s a precursor to Big Ten media days next week, with the league’s 18 women’s teams taking center stage on Oct. 8. at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont before the 18 men’s teams do the same at the same venue on Oct. 9.
➜ 3. The Illini men have their lone exhibition game at 2 p.m. on Oct. 19 against Illinois State at State Farm Center. An Illinois State team that was picked to finish first in the preseason Missouri Valley Conference poll this week. The Illini women’s exhibition game is Oct. 30 against Maryville.
Champaign Central and Centennial in a girls’ flag football game on Sept. 10.
Numbers game: 5
area girls’ flag football teams in the IHSA postseason. Mahomet-Seymour hosts a regional, with three games next Monday: No. 8 Peoria against No. 9 Danville at 4:30 p.m., No. 4 Edwardsville against No. 13 Urbana at 6 p.m. and No. 5 M-S against No. 11 Centennial at 7:30 p.m. Champaign Central, a No. 7 seed, plays No. 10 seed Belleville West at 4:30 p.m. next Monday in Mascoutah.
Johnny Timmons and the Champaign Central boys’ golf team tees off in a Class 3A regional tournament at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin on Wednesday.
Crowd control
Three events I’m paying attention to
➜ 1. Class 3A Pekin boys’ golf regional. Champaign Central is one of eight teams who will tee off Wednesday at Lick Creek Golf Coursem, trying to advance to next Monday’s Lockport Sectional.
➜ 2. Class 2A Normal U-High boys’ golf regional. Danville and Mahomet-Seymour are in the nine-team tournament on Wednesday at Weibring Golf Club, which is also the site of the 2A state tournament.
➜ 3. Class 1A Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin boys’ golf regional. Vermilion Valley Conference champion Westville is among the 14 teams in action on Wednesday at Turtle Run Golf Club in Danville. Also watch out for BHRA, St. Joseph-Ogden, St. Thomas More and Salt Fork.
