MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell’s boys track and field team closed the State Track and Field Championships Saturday with strong performances in the throwing events at Howard Wood Field. Senior Logan Bessler placed sixth in the Class AA shot put with a personal-best throw of 51 feet, 7 inches, while junior Bryer Stach finished eighth at 49 feet, 8.25 inches. The pair combined for nine of Mitchell’s 12 team points in the boys standings. Mitchell finished 15th overall with 12 points, while Sioux Falls Lincoln won the Class AA boys team title. The Kernels added a seventh-place finish in the 4-by-400 relay in the final event. On the girls side, Mitchell finished 20th with two points.

— Mitchell Kernel girls golf team competes in the Class AA state tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Cattail Crossing Golf Course in Watertown. The Kernels will be in the first five groups to start the tournament at 8:20 a.m. on Monday. The Class A Girls’ Tournament is at Two Rivers Golf Course in North Sioux City. The Class B State Golf Tournaments are in Brookings.

— Mitchell Legion baseball opens the season on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Watertown at 5 p.m. Post 18 will play two games at Aberdeen on Wednesday before playing in the Yankton Tournament June 5th – 7th. Post 18’s home opener is June 16th against Helena, Montana.

— Palace City Baseball Association will conduct its annual Pop Drive Fundraiser on Thursday, June 4th. The fundraiser helps to support summer baseball opportunities for South Dakota Class A and American Legion baseball players in Mitchell. Players from Palace City Baseball will be helping sell Pepsi products throughout the community as part of the fundraising effort from 5 PM to 8 PM. Community members can purchase a variety of Pepsi products, Bubbl’r sparkling waters, and bottled water through the fundraiser. Pre-sales are available now online at PalaceCityBaseball.com.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— A decisive fifth inning ended South Dakota State’s season on Saturday as Arizona State broke open a scoreless game with an 11-run frame and rolled to a 17-0 win in an NCAA Regional elimination game in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Jackrabbits finished the year 24-33 and went 0-2 in the NCAA Baseball Championship. The game was scoreless through four innings before Arizona State erupted in the fifth, sending 15 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs. The Sun Devils added five more in the sixth, including a grand slam, to pull away.

STATE TRACK & FIELD
— Freeman closed the State Track and Field Meet with a pair of Class B relay titles on Saturday. Freeman won both the boys 4×200 and 4×400-meter relays, with Luke Miller, Luke Peters, Brody Sorensen and Tate Sorensen leading the way. The Flyers’ sweep helped them finish third in the Class B boys team standings. In Class B boys distance action, Mitchell Christian’s Luke Mentele completed a middle-distance sweep, winning the 1,600 meters one day after taking the 800-meter title. Teammate Silas Holdeman won the 3,200 meters, helping Mitchell Christian place fourth in the team standings. Kimball/White Lake senior Lincoln Kranig capped his career with two individual titles, winning the 400 meters and the 200 meters in a meet-record 21.89 seconds. He also finished second in the 100 meters and was named Class B boys track MVP.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Braxton Ashcraft struck out 11 in six innings, while Ryan O’Hearn and Nick Gonzales homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Minnesota Twins 9-3 to complete a three-game sweep. Brooks Lee had a two-run homer in the sixth and a solo shot in the ninth for Minnesota. The Twins, losers of five straight games, host the Chicago White Sox on Monday at 6:40 pm.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to hire Seattle Seahawks assistant Nolan Teasley as their new general manager. Teasley, who has spent his entire 13-year NFL career with Seattle, has served as assistant general manager since 2023 and has been part of a Seahawks organization that has reached three Super Bowls and won two championships during his tenure in the front office. He replaces Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who was fired in January after four seasons.

NBA
— Victor Wembanyama scored 22 points as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the defending champions on the road Saturday night, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals to advance to the NBA Finals. Julian Champagnie added 20 points as San Antonio overcame a 3-2 Oklahoma City series lead to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 35 points and nine assists. The Spurs will face the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night.

MLB
— Ben Rice had two extra-base hits and four RBIs in a 13-run third inning that was the biggest for the New York Yankees in 21 years, carrying them to a 13-8 victory over the Athletics. The Yankees got the first 12 batters on in the inning, marking the first time they pulled that off in nearly 77 years. New York finished the 43-minute half inning with 11 hits, four walks and four steals while sending 18 batters to the plate and facing 75 pitches. It was the most runs allowed in an inning by the A’s since 1950.

— Jacob Misiorowski struck out eight in seven innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros. Misiorowski had 57 strikeouts in May, which is a franchise record for any pitcher in a calendar month. He allowed just one earned run this month for a 0.23 ERA and held opponents to a .109 average.

— Yoshi Yamamoto had a season-high 10 strikeouts in 5 1/3 scoreless innings as the Los Angeles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-1.

— Victor Robles’ infield single scored Randy Arozarena in the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners completed a three-game series sweep with a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Seattle has won a season-high six straight games.

— Colson Montgomery homered and Tristan Peters’ RBI single put the White sox ahead as Chicago rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 for their fifth straight win. Detroit lost for the 21st time in 25 games.

— Willy Adames hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run fifth inning as the San Francisco Giants avoided a series sweep with a 19-6 win over the Colorado Rockies. Jung Hoo Lee had two of his career-high five hits in the fifth. Bryce Eldridge also homered, doubled twice and singled, while Rafael Devers had three doubles and scored four runs. The Giants set season highs for runs, hits (25) and extra-base hits (13).

— Matthew Liberatore took a shutout into the sixth inning and Masyn Winn hit a two-run single as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1.

— Jack Leiter struck out 10 in 5 2/3 scoreless innings, while Ezequiel Duran tripled home two in a four-run first as the Texas Rangers earned their second series sweep this season with a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Kansas City has lost six in a row and nine of 11. The Royals have won only seven road games, fewest in the majors.

— Shane McClanahan pitched one-run ball for five innings and Jonathan Aranda homered as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2.

— Eugenio Suárez homered for the first time since April 15 to lead the Cincinnati Reds over the Atlanta Braves 6-4.

— Juan Soto hit a grand slam as the New York Mets routed the Miami Marlins 10-1 to finish a three-game sweep.

— Boston’s Masataka Yoshida had the go-ahead single during a six-run seventh inning as the Red Sox rallied for a 9-4 victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

— James Wood and Luis García Jr. each homered as the Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 4-2.

— Baltimore’s Kyle Bradish pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, while Colton Cowser homered and drove in four runs as the Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-5.
