LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball split its games during the past week, and following that has dropped to No. 14 in Monday’s update of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The Jayhawks (20-7, 10-4 in Big 12) were ranked No. 12 last week. After that, they won on the road against Oklahoma State and lost at home in an upset against Cincinnati. This week, the Jayhawks have games at home Monday against No. 4 Houston and Saturday on the road at No. 2 Arizona.

The Big 12 also has No. 5 Iowa State, No. 16 Texas Tech and No. 23 BYU. Kansas doesn’t have any regular season games remaining against that group. Following this week, KU has games on the road at Arizona State and at home against Kansas State.

The national attention continues to center on the availability of star freshman Darryn Peterson. However, it’s guys like senior Melvin Council Jr. and sophomore Flory Bidunga who’ve continued to keep KU in the conversation when Peterson hasn’t been able to. It’s that depth of talent, that could allow the Jayhawks to make a deep run in the Big 12 Conference and NCAA tournaments.
