The name’s Villeneuve . . . Denis Villeneuve.
The French-Canadian filmmaker is set to direct and executively produce the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios announced on June 25. Among Villeneuve’s work is the Dune franchise, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, all of which have won Academy Awards.
Villeneuve’s addition to the team follows a wave of changes in the franchise, with Daniel Craig making his last appearance as the famed MI6 agent in the 2021 incarnation No Time to Die. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who shepherded the 007 legacy, also stepped down after over 30 years at the helm. Amazon, which completed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in March 2022, had to reportedly spend an additional $1 billion to secure complete control over the Bond franchise.
“I’m a die-hard Bond fan,” Villeneuve said in a statement from Amazon. “To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”
Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon MGM studios, shared the sentiment, calling Villeneuve “a cinematic master” and “one of today’s greatest filmmakers.” The director is known for his dynamic and expansive visuals, characters with complex lives, and sweeping action sequences with profound emotional tension. He is joined on the production team by Canadian filmmaker Tanya Lapointe, Amy Pascal (of Spider-Man fame), and David Heyman (who worked on all eight Harry Potter films).
“Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy,” Pascal and Heyman said. “It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too.”
While there is not yet a timeline for the release of the forthcoming Bond film, fans may have to cool their heels. Villeneuve is currently working on Dune Messiah, the third movie in the Dune franchise that has a potential release date in December 2026.
In the meantime, there has been much speculation about who will take over as 007 since Craig has retired from the legendary part. In March, rumors swirled after an article in The Sun alleged that British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s starred in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Kick-Ass, and Bullet Train, had been formally offered the lead role, but no developments have occurred since. Others suspect Irish actor Paul Mescal or Callum Turner, respective stars of Normal People and the Fantastic Beasts films, could revive the iconic titular character. For now, predictions of a lead actor are stuck in the rumor mill, but no matter who they are, they’ve got big shoes to fill.
