Celluloid Dreams Boards Indian Venice Entry ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’

French sales outfit Celluloid Dreams has boarded world sales rights to “Songs of Forgotten Trees,” the debut feature from Indian filmmaker Anuparna Roy that will bow in Venice’s Horizons section.

Variety is exclusively debuting the film’s first clip.

The Mumbai-set drama follows Thooya, a migrant and aspiring actress who navigates the city by leveraging her beauty and wit, occasionally trading intimacy for opportunity. When she sublets her sugar daddy’s upscale apartment to Swetha, a fellow migrant working a corporate job, the two women from seemingly different worlds begin to share more than just living space. Amid Mumbai’s relentless pulse, they discover a silent empathy, though their delicate connection faces tests as personal histories, desires and wounds resurface.

The film stars Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel, with Bhushan Shimpi, Ravi Maan, Pritam Pilania and Lovely Singh in supporting roles. Debjit Samanta handles cinematography, with editing by Ashish Patel and music by Nishant Ramteke.

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap presents the project, which is produced by Flip Films’ Ranjan Singh, River Tale Films’ Bibhanshu Rai, Romil Casting’s Romil Modi and Nube Studio – Nube Cirrus’ Navin Shetty, in association with Khan & Kumar Media’s Sharib Khan and Vikas Kumar.

“Celluloid Dreams is thrilled to support such an ambitious and captivating project as ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees,’ which aligns perfectly with our editorial slant, as well as start a new and ambitious partnership,” said Saliha Guemraoui, CEO of Celluloid Dreams.

Roy added: “I am pleased that Celluloid has partnered with our film, and I have full faith in them that they will take it to the world, in the best possible way.”

Producer Ranjan Singh said: “We are glad that Saliha and her team at Celluloid saw the film and have onboarded it. With their proven record of excellent films in the past, we are excited to start this journey with them.”
